How to replace a Smiley in Yahoo Messenger

First of all I would like to say when you replace a Smiley You will be the only one who will see the Smiley when you post the Smiley others in the room will see the DEFAULT Smiley used by Messenger!!If your friends replace the same ones as you have you will both see the Replacement Smileys
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ Media\smileys
If you look in Yahoo Messenger Smileys folder you will see there is 2 sets of pictures for each Smiley a BMPand a Gif you will need to rename your new Smiley for the one you are replacing (the gif)you will also need to rename the bmp!The gif is the one you will see in the chat room the bmp is the one you will see when you click on the selector to select a smiley to show in the chat room! You need both for this to work! Look in the Yahoo Messenger folder and click on the view at top select thumbnail Now you will be able to see the pictures in the folder
Ok find the file that has the replacement Smileys look in Messenger folder and find the one you want to replace You might want to copy the Smiley's Gif and BMP to a folder incase you want to put them back Just right click on your desktop and select new folder name the folder smileys (or what name you choose to name it) open that folder and drag and drop the Gif and Bmp of the smiley you are replacing in to that folder.you do not need to rename the ones you are removing as if you want to put the old smileys back you would just need to drop them back in the yahoo messenger folder ok...I would say do one at a time after you move that smiley and its BMP move the one you are replacing it with (and its BMP into the yahoo messenger folder) and then right click on the Smiley gif and rename it to the same as the one you are replacing (if you are replacing 1.gif rename the one you put in to 1.gif)make sure the .gif is there (example 1 will not work it needs to be 1.gif)Now replace the BMP to that smiley as you did with the GIF renaming to 1bmp...Thats it simple huh!
reboot messenger completely and have fun.....
If you have found a smiley on the web you want to use and it does not have the BMP you will need to take a minute and make the second file(bmp) Just open the Smiley in windows paint program,(start/programs/accessories/paint) then select save as, and save with the same name. and select 256 Color Bitmap(bmp) then save(save to the same folder as you have the GIF saved at) then just follow the renaming instructions as above ok..

How to show the pictures Click on view and then select thumbnail
To rename the picture right click on the picture and select rename be careful to leave the .gif there
now you see that the gif has been renamed to 1.gif now do the same with the bmp
Now both have been renamed and are ready to replace 1.gif and 1.bmp in the Yahoo messenger folder
Remember to move the ones your replacing first ok
